How to Get Pet Smells Out of Your Carpet

unique larry and willyAh, pets. We love ’em!! But, accidents do happen sometimes, especially when we’re talking about really young and really old pets. That urine smell is tough to remove from carpets and rugs. The warm acid state of the urine offers a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. This may cause a permanent color change in the carpet if the urine is not removed immediately. So, what to do? Here’s some advice from Unique Larry (and Willy the Urinator).

Act as fast as possible and blot, blot, blot.
If any urine is still wet, blot the area repeatedly with a clean white towel to absorb the liquid. After the spot has completely dried, blot a solution of one-half white vinegar and one-half warm water into the area to help reduce odors. Vinegar neutralizes the ammonia smell without fading carpet fibers. If you discovered the urine spot after it has already dried, you can still apply the vinegar/water solution to the area as above to try and neutralize the odor and halt bacteria growth. Unique Larry gives even more DIY details in his video:

Our Unique urine solution.
If your pet has made several accidents on your carpets and/or rugs, it’s time to bring in Unique! For mild cases, we clean and decontaminate from the surface by using a heavy-duty pre-treatment solution which we then follow with a thorough cleaning and extraction. We treat the surface with a powerful decontamination treatment using a specially formulated product that loosens the dog, cat, and pet urine salts for better removal than home cleaning. We follow with a deep cleaning process to remove as much urine as possible from the carpet fibers. When we are done, there are usually no urine spots or pet odors left in your carpets.

In severe cases, urine may have penetrated both the carpet backing and the padding beneath. We will pull up the carpet and remove the padding if necessary. We make sure you don’t have sub-surface urine spots which will cause future pet odors. We then clean rinse and extract both sides of the carpet and then follow with a treatment of our powerful decontamination solution. This carpet solution destroys any remaining bacteria and pet odor within the carpet or upholstered fibers.

  • Great video Unique Larry! We do love our pets but they can make mistakes sometimes. I was unaware of vinegar as a resource. I do appreciate that tip. I also like your video as it gives some great tips for other spot removals, especially since I have a bad habit of spilling drinks from time to time. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, this is great. I think the mistake that I have made in the past is blot for a few seconds and start spraying with cleaning solution. What you shared makes perfect sense. I will use these next time.
